I rewatch the 86 broadcast every year the week before and that happened to be last night. I almost always notice something that had never occurred to me. This time I was struck by an exchange early in the broadcast where they had Gary Player providing commentary.

Steve Melnyk asked him something to the effect of what he thought about all these “foreigners” competing at Augusta. Player, although it’s nearly imperceptible, was seething and would’ve put a 4i through Melnyk’s skull if he could have. Lol.

Other observations:

1) I miss the analysts introducing themselves and describing their assigned holes. Was a great way to start Sunday and particularly so for the more casual fan. Which I definitely was at that time being 16 in April of ‘86.

2) Pat Summerall is criminally underrated and had unmatched chemistry with Ken Venturi. But that was Pat. Whoever he worked with whether Venturi, Tony Trabert, John Madden etc. he made them the star AND the event. No matter how prestigious Summerall added gravitas.

3) What can you say about Nantz. This day and age everyone is fired upon from the relentless online army of haters. Nantz has not been immune from this, especially recently. I’ve never been crazy about how he calls a football game but that’s just a mild critique. From a golf perspective and specifically The Masters it’s very hard to imagine it without Nantz as MC. I probably will live to see the end being 54 but you never know. A lot can go wrong from here on out.

I would suggest CBS start grooming someone for that role because I don’t see the natural transition that existed from Summerall to Nantz.

Hmm, we should wish that every piece dedicated to the Masters had the qualities of this one. Nice job on Nantz, you both own it in your own way...
